Planting trees and shrubs is one of the most rewarding things you can do for your outdoor space! Whether you’re looking to add shade, boost curb appeal, or create a cozy backyard retreat, mastering tree planting techniques will set you up for success. I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know to get those roots growing strong and healthy. Ready to dig in? Let’s go!
Why Proper Tree Planting Techniques Matter
You might think planting a tree is as simple as digging a hole and dropping it in the ground. But oh, there’s so much more to it! Using the right tree planting techniques ensures your new plants thrive for years to come. When done right, your trees and shrubs will establish quickly, resist pests and diseases, and grow into beautiful, sturdy additions to your landscape.
Here’s why it’s crucial to get it right from the start:
Root health: Proper planting prevents roots from circling or suffocating.
Water absorption: Correct depth and soil preparation help roots soak up water efficiently.
Growth direction: Positioning the tree properly encourages strong, upright growth.
Longevity: Healthy planting means your tree will live longer and require less maintenance.
Trust me, a little extra care during planting pays off big time!
Essential Tree Planting Techniques You Need to Know
Let’s break down the key steps to planting trees and shrubs like a pro. Follow these techniques, and you’ll be amazed at how well your plants take off!
1. Choose the Right Spot
Before you even pick up a shovel, think about where your tree or shrub will thrive. Consider:
Sunlight needs (full sun, partial shade, or shade)
Soil type and drainage
Space for mature size (both height and width)
Proximity to buildings, power lines, and underground utilities
2. Dig the Perfect Hole
The hole should be 1.5x as wide as the root ball but only as deep as the root ball’s height. This gives roots plenty of loose soil to spread out into without burying the trunk too deep.
3. Prepare the Soil
Loosen the soil around the hole and mix in some organic compost to boost nutrients and drainage. Avoid heavy fertilizers at planting time, they can burn young roots.
4. Handle the Roots with Care
If your tree is in a container, gently loosen the roots before planting. For balled-and-burlapped trees, keep the burlap on, we use biodegradable string and burlap at maple leaf farms, if you bought it somewhere else, ask the supplier what type of burlap is on the tree.
5. Position and Backfill
Place the tree in the hole so the root flare (where roots spread at the base) is above ground level. Backfill with soil, tamping gently to remove air pockets but don’t compact too much.
6. Water Deeply and Mulch
Give your new tree a good soak right after planting. Then, add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. Mulch helps retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay.

7. Stake if Necessary
If your tree is tall or in a windy spot, staking can provide support while roots establish. Use soft ties and remove stakes after one growing season to avoid damage.
How to Care for Your Trees and Shrubs After Planting
Planting is just the beginning! Your care routine in the first few years will make all the difference.
Water deeply, not frequently: Keep soil moist but not soggy, especially during dry spells.
Prune carefully: Remove dead or damaged branches, but avoid heavy pruning in the first year.
Watch for pests: Early detection can save your tree from serious damage.
Fertilize sparingly: Use slow-release fertilizers if needed.
Remember, patience is key. Trees and shrubs take time to settle in and grow strong.
